2학년때 쯤이라 생각한다. 공포같은 두려움을 경험한 적이 있다. 마치 사후 세계를 상상하듯 밤마다 내 죽음 이후의 주변 사람들의 심경을 상상했다. 나는 생각이 없어지는 것에 대해 엄청난 공포감과 두려움을 느꼈다. 그러나 생각이 없어진다는 것은 공포에 가까운 공허함, 그리고 사라진다는 것에 대해 두려움으로 완벽하게 상상이 되질 않았다. 그때부터 그 상상을 의도적으로 피했던. 죽음이란 것이 나에게 처음으로 낯설게 기억되었던 생생한 순간이다. 어린시절 잊혀지지 않는 경험들이 몇 가지 더 있다. 생각의 경험이 이렇게 또렷할 수가 있을까? 연민을 느꼈던 것들. 말도 안되는 연민 때문에 삶을 우회해 간적이 많다. 그럴때마다 마음 밑바닥을 살펴보면 꼭 연민이라는 아이가 있었다. 그래서 연민은 가장 피하고 싶은 감정이다. 두려움, 연민, 또 하나 기억나는 또렷한 감정은 몸을 통해 느꼈던 기억. 그것은 피부 끝에 느껴지는 흥분과 같은 감정이다. 처음에는 표피에서 시작하지만 어느덧 두터운 표피는 사라지고 내부로 자극되는. 인간의 구멍에는 욕망이 개입되어 있다. 눈으로 혹은 입으로 귓구멍으로. 욕망의 구멍은 그것을 쫓아가면서 해결되기도 하고, 쫓지 못해서 불타오르기도 한다. 아주 아파서 내보이지 못했고 그래서 은밀하게 숨겨왔던 내 질구멍. 어떤 때는 계속 냄새가 난다고 여긴적도 있었고, 의도적으로 아플 준비를 하고 있었던 것 같기도 하다. 경계에 대한 생각을 매번 한다. 경계를 생각하다 보면 아주 다른 성질과 성질이 폭풍처럼 관통될때가 있다. 나는 관통되기 직전 살을 비는 듯한 살바람을 몹시 좋아한다. 그러나 좋지 못한 환경에서의 살바람은 나를 비장하게 한다. 살려주세요. 나를 살게 해주세요. 누가 시키지 않았는데 툭 튀어 나왔던 바람같은 말 한마디였다. 그래서인지 섬에는 다시 가고 싶지 않다. 가면 의도치 않게 자주 발이 묶였다. 조금만 발을 딛으면 살아있는 풀이 있고, 물이 있었는데 한발짝도 나오질 못했다. 누군가가 시킨걸까? 강요였는지 스스로 선택한건지 나는 알수가 없다. 섬에는 자꾸 소리가 난다. 냄새도 난다. 가만히 있으면 소리도 사라지고 냄새도 사라진다. 어쩔때는 무언가를 말 하고 싶은데 목소리가 나지 않을때도 있다. 누군가의 소리가 들린다. 웃지 말라고 한다. 그 섬에선 웃는게 금기인 이상한 섬이다.

열대야처럼 해가 뜨겁던 섬. 기억을 곱이곱이 더듬어보면 몇가지 기억들이 떠오른다. 그 섬에 발을 들인 순간 건네지는 환영문구는 어서오세요 반갑습니다 이름이뭐니 따위의 당연한 수순을 밟지않았다. 너 니네 엄마한테 버려져서 여기 온거야. 그 미치광이 여자는 그림에 눈이 멀었거든. 그리고 그 입성에 대한 기억을 바탕으로 불쑥불쑥 파생되는 그 이후의 기억들. 퀘퀘한 나프탈렌 냄새. 달랑 창문 하나에 침대 하나가 놓인 네모난 방. 아무도 무엇을 해야하는지 알려주지 않아서 매일 하나뿐인 침대에 송장처럼 누워 네모난 휴대폰 가끔은 네모난 천장을 멍하니 바라보던 기억. 네모난 것들이 지겨워질쯤 손목에 붉은 직선들을 새기던 기억. 괴롭고 고통스러워서 혹은 견딜 수 없어서 감정을 분출했다기보단 아무것도 할게 없기에 새겨진 선들을 보는게 재밌었다. 아무도 매일 씻어야한다고 말해주지 않았기 때문에 일주일에 한번씩 이와 발을 닦던 기억. 그 섬에서는 여자가 울면 재수없는 일이 생긴다고 곧게 믿었다. 그래서 내가 속상할때 우는 것은 죄악이 됐고 울면 옷을 다 벗겨서 알몸으로 학교를 보내버리고말겠다는 겁박을 종종 들었다. 그래도 참지 못하고 울어버릴때면 당신은 집을 나가버렸다. 어디를 가는지 언제 오는지도 말해주지 않은 채 네모난 방과 네모난 침대에 나를 남기고 떠났다. 그 속절없는 기다림의 시간은 두려움과 불안함과 자책으로 점철되어 숨을 마구 옥죄어왔다. 그리고 당신의 어깨를 주무르던 기억. 맨들맨들한 종아리를 주무르고 등을 두드리던 기억. 그 귀여운 노고에 당신이 미소를 지어주던 기억. 당신이 떡볶이가 먹고싶다고하면 옷을 갈아입고 부리나케 집 앞 분식점을 뛰어가던 기억. 뛰어가는 순간은 늘 두근거렸다. 분명 내가 돌아갔을 때 당신이 나에게 미소지어 줄테니까.

Zero Degree Islnad 《무각섬》

김마저는 최근 《쉐이프드 목기》(플레이스막, 2022), 《무각형 形角無》(공간형, 2022) 전시에서부터 새로운 ‘무각’시리즈를 발표하고 있다. 건축적인 양식과 결합하여 ‘규정지을 수 없는 비정형의 도형’을 만들고 있는 김마저는 각진 나무 목기에 자개나 털을 더하여 선과 면, 입체를 오가는 작업을 하고 있다. 무각 시리즈에 더하여 작가는 최근 현대무용을 기반으로 한 <무각무>를 만들었다. 이번 신작의 작품 제목인 <낙원상가 (Paradise Shopping Mall)>(2024)는 그 어원이 ‘장벽을 두른 곳’이라는 뜻을 담았다. 고대 페르시아에서는 ‘낙원’이 넓게 담장을 치고 여러 식물을 가꾼다는 의미로 사용되었다. 김마저는 어원에 가까운 의미로 ‘낙원’의 뜻에 주목하며, 실제 조형작품의 기저에 깔려 있는 은둔과 외톨이와 반대되는 반의적 표현을 함께 담았다.

《무각섬》 전시에서는 본래의 무각형이 중심이 되는 조형물에 퍼포먼스와 관객체험을 더한다. 김마저의 무각형은 비정형의 도형이지만 여기에 털과 같이 부드러운 소재나 구체적인 패턴이 더해져 ‘모순’적 상황, 즉 반대의 성질이 한 자리에 패턴화 되어 함께 공존한다. 이 같은 양가적인 속성이 지속적으로 등장하는 것은 김마저가 작품을 풀어가는 주요 방식이다. 그것은 작가가 초기에 ‘무각’이라는 것을 떠올렸을 때의 심리적인 모순 상태에서 출발하는 것이기도 하다. 김마저는 겉으로는 변형가능한 도형의 형태를 만들어가는 것처럼 보이지만, 내면에는 사회적인 틀이나 규범이 왜곡되어 가는 과정에 주목한다. 가족들과의 관계에서 어떤 ‘틀’이나 ‘규칙’들이 과도하게 적용되는 과정에서 벗어날 수 없는 것 같은 마음 상태가 영향을 끼쳤고, 작가는 보이지 않는 틀 안에서 어쩔 수 없이 적응하면서 때로 스스로 마음의 섬을 만들기도 하였다. 김마저의 기하학적인 무각은 테두리가 지속적으로 변화하면서 유동적인 성격을 갖는데, 이때 테두리는 작가가 벗어날 수 없는 틀이기도 하면서 반대로 작가가 빠져 나오고 싶은 틀이 된다. 그것은 작가도 모르게 주변인들에게서 틀지워지는 ‘사회적 무의식’인데, 이 사회적 무의식은 주로 언어, 논리, 금기로 여겨진다. 그리고 이렇게 지워진 틀은 개인적인 믿음이 진실인 것처럼 강요되면서 마치 사회적 억압인 것처럼 원치 않는 방향으로 확장된다. 김마저는 이러한 사회적 억압을 벗어나는 방법으로 《무각섬》에서 자신의 공간을 만든다. 무각 도형과 오색실을 한 작업 안에서 대치시키듯이 작가는 거대한 원형의 털정원 <사자는 사자 정원에 없다 2024> 작품 안에 작가로서의 루틴한 삶을 담은 듯한 조형적 작품 배치를 시도하였다. 이 섬은 가구로 된 조형이다. 무각형의 두개의 면을 서로 격자로 끼워 네 개의 공간을 만든다. 그리고 네 개의 공간에 침대, 책상, 식탁, 마루로 된 공간을 배치하였다.무각섬은 의식주를 해결하는 집이자 섬이다.

문화비축기지 T1의 정점을 향해 솟아 있는 독특한 가구 형식의 입체 작품은 작가가 느끼는 억압적 상황을 뚫겠다는 욕망을 솟구치듯 표현한 부분이다. 작가는 이 장소를 ‘섬’이라고도 말하는 데, 틀에 갇힌 사회적 고독을 뜻하면서 그 틀을 다시 깨야 되는 상반된 상황을 보인다. 이 장소는 작가가 온종일 작업과 명상, 삶을 보내는 장소이자 죽음을 은유하기도 하는 공간이다. 거대한 털 정원은 마치 마그마같이 끓어 올라오는 힘이 드러나는 동시에 그것을 막듯이 방어와 억압이 동시에 보이는 곳이 된다. 김마저의 붉은 오색실은 전통적인 북청사자놀음에서 기인한 것이다. 북청사자놀음은 정월대보름에 주로 하는 놀이로 거대한 가면과 붉은 털 아래 2명의 사람이 들어가 춤을 추어 사자의 외형을 연상하게 하는 사자춤이 주를 이룬다. 고조에 이르렀을 때 사자가 입수하는 장면들이 북청사자춤에 나오는데, 김마저 역시 붉은 오색실에 사자가 벌떡 솟으면서 춤을 추는 순간적 그간의 억압적 상황을 털어내는 듯했다. 오색실로 가득한 원형의 공간은 작가에게 언제든지 틀을 깨고 솟아나고, 새로운 질서를 확립시킬 수 있도록 하는 주요한 모티브가 된다. 작가는 북청사자놀음 중에서도 특히 곱추춤에 애정을 보인다. 곱추가 혼자 나와서 추는 곱추춤은 춤추는 이의 옷에 헝겊을 넣어 불룩 튀어나오게 하고 흥겹게 춤을 추어 동정보다는 웃음이 나도록 하는 춤이다. 또한 혼자 추는 춤이기 때문에 곱추의 상황을 연출하여 변형된 몸짓을 표현한다. 넋두리와 안장 다리춤 등 자유자재로 춤추는 이의 몸에 의해 동작이 바뀌어나간다. 세상에서 가장 낮은 이의 몸짓이 사람들에게 많은 웃음을 안겨주는 상반된 모습을 보고 작가는 일반인들과 다르게 움직이는 곱추춤의 외형이 무각형과 많이 닮았다고 느꼈다. 이 춤은 작가의 개인사에서 만나는 여러 경계성 성격의 사람들을 연상시키며 김마저가 《무각섬》 전시에서 새로운 시도로서 퍼포먼스를 하게 되는 데에 많은 영향을 주었다.

무각의 형태, 틀의 안과 밖, 억압과 해방, 삶과 죽음, 괴로움과 치유가 공존하고 있는 《무각섬》 전시에서 작가가 시도하고 있는 것은 퍼포먼스이다. 북청사자춤에서 느꼈던 감정과 작가의 무각형을 구축하는 과정을 응용하여 작가는 신작을 발표한다. 4명의 퍼포머와 함께 직접 작가도 참여하는 <무각섬>은 연결된 줄을 이용하여 허공에 사각형을 만들면서 시작한다. 상하좌우, 고정된 사각의 틀 안에서 꿈틀거리며 퍼포머들은 사각의 문으로 들어가거나 사자털 정원의 안과 밖을 자유로이 넘나들며 곱추춤에서 받은 영감을 현대무용이 섞인 퍼포먼스로 공연한다. 특히 이번 퍼포먼스에 참여하는 관객들은 털로 만든 거대한 사자 털 정원을 함께 경험할 수 있도록 한다. 관객들은 섬 관람시간을 마련하여 탐구의 대상으로 삼으며, 작가가 느끼는 순간적인 해방감을 함께 나눌 수 있다.

김마저의 태도는 삶에서 마주하는 무수한 경계와 정형화된 규정들 사이 사이에서 발생하는 쉼과 자유로움을 추적하는 내부욕망으로 나타난다. 이 같은 작가의 예술철학은 모더니티와 통용된 표준개념, 추상과 형상 등의 이분화를 경계하는 것으로 회화를 공간으로 확장시키는 조형실험을 통해 각 개체들의 상호교차 상호전이, 상호공존의 이야기로 펼쳐진다.

김마저의 ‘무각(non angular)’ 작업은 그 제목 그대로 정형화된 프레임 자체, 평면적 바라보기를 통해 정형화된 도형을 인식해왔던 인지적 경직성, 즉 평면적 바라보기의 맹점을 건드린다. 따라서 그는 정형화된 도형들의 프레임을 해체하고 보다 유연한 시각으로 평면적 인식 도형을 실재하는 공간으로 차원을 결합, 확장함으로써 특정한 메시지의 전달보다는 직접적인 방식으로 경험되는 ‘감각’적 바라보기를 유도한다.

작가의 세계에서는 존재하는 모든 것들이 움직인다. 《形角無》은 자신만의 에너지를 발산하면서 끊임없이 움직이는 개체 고유의 개별성을 인지하도록 우리의 유연성을 확장시킨다. 그리고 형식적, 개념적으로 범주화가 어려운 경계 지대에서 두 물건을, 두 사람을, 두 세계를 훼손하지 않고, 각 개별들을 상호관계시킴으로써 우리가 함께 공존할 수 있음을 이야기한다.

‘나-타인-사물-세계’의 광범위한 스펙트럼에서 우리는 끊임없이 만나고 사건을 일으킨다. 무각형 세계에서 우리는 유동하는 상호 관계의 불확실성으로부터 각자의 삶을 온전히 지키며, 동시에 유연성으로 공존할 수 있을 것만 같다.

김마저는 이러한 상호관계적 바라보기가 개별적 오브제성 혹은 개체의 특수성보다 비할 수 없는 풍부한 삶의 의미를 가져올 수 있음을 이야기하는 듯 하다. 이것이 바로 김마저가 만물을 생성시키는 근원으로서 공(空)을 사고하는 개념적 근거일 것이다.

김마저가 제시한 무각형은 있음에 대립하는 없음도 아닌, 모든 있음 들을 발생시키는 혹은 형태를 발생시키기 이전의 잠재적 상태로서의 찰나적 상태로, 어떤 차원도 갖지 않으며 어떤 척도에 의해서도 규정될 수 없음을 제시한다. 원이면서 삼각, 동시에 사각인, 뜨겁지도 차갑지도 않은, 이 색도 저 색도 아닌, 이차원 혹은 다차원 사이의 그야말로 Zero degree이다. 그 규정 지을 수 없는 불확실성이야말로 어쩌면 우리가 대면해야하는 가장 불편한 진실이고, 우리가 마주하고 싶지 않은 낯섦일 것이다.

비록 그것이 재구성과 재결합하여 제시된 불완전성을 필연으로 하는 이질적 축적의 무엇으로 보일지라도 그 불확실성을 그대로 대면하고 수용할 때, 그 개별성들은 더없이 소중하게 빛날 것이다. 우리의 몸과 마음을 두드리면서.

“Shaped Wooden Objects” of Nomadic Desire and Playful Spirit.”

When we think of furniture, we generally picture a straight-edged, rectangular box-shaped object. This form, originally devised for convenient storage and production, is now a widely accepted convention. However, wooden objects by Majeo Kim subvert this convention with unique playfulness.
In contrast to the sharp or obtuse angles found in traditional furniture, her work features subtly curved lines. At times, they feature a unique comma-like shape that appears as though they were made by bending the wood like soft caramel. While it may be easy to create such a form in drawing, to create it from rigid, inelastic material, such as wood, is extremely difficult. To create this type of variation in form, a special woodworking tool called a “jig” is needed. Through this laborious process, the artist’s “shaped wooden objects” are born.

Majeo Kim’s objects, often produced in the form of a relief, are not designed for any specific function, but they offer a potential space to place other objects. This design choice reconciles
the autonomy of art with the functionality of furniture, by transforming the functional space of furniture into a psychological one. The artist breaks down the dichotomous boundaries between furniture and sculpture; functionality and autonomy; craft and art, and by so doing, enjoys the freedom of neutrality without compromising.

In many aspects of their form, these works draw similarities to the “shaped canvas” in minimalism. Frank Stella’s shaped canvas abandoned the conventional rectangular form in order to strive art’s autonomy and eliminate pictorial illusion. Ultimately, the content of the painting became the form itself, adhering to the artist’s principle, “What you see is what you see.” The shaped canvas in minimalism completely eliminated everyday life, and by revealing its “self-referential” nature, allowed for the viewers to experience its phenomenological presence.

However, unlike minimalism in Western art which sought to erase elements of human and nature, Majeo Kim’s “shaped wooden objects” layers passionate human emotions and desires onto cold, functional, and minimalist furniture. Louis H. Sullivan’s famous statement – “Form follows function” – became the tenet of functionalism in modern craftsmanship that strived to eliminate any unnecessary decorative element, and solely focus on function. However, as Frank Gehry attempted to deconstruct the “matchbox” in modern architecture, Majeo Kim’s objects similarly deconstruct functionalist furniture by layering her own nomadic desire and playful spirit. The artist describes her body of work as a “play on non-angularity.”

“Non-angular form refers to a nongeometric form that is fluid and indefinable. We categorize most shapes into triangles and rectangles, continuously defining ourselves within the codes of our system and standards. (From the artist’s notes)”

“Non-angularity,” as discussed here, signifies the dynamic forces that allow form to escape conventional shapes like triangles and rectangles, and freely evolve. In the same context, “non-angularity” does not signify “having no angles,” but rather a concept of “fluidity” that continually evolves and changes through its relationship with others. This concept of “non-angularity,” therefore, is not a fixed space defined by geometry, but one which reflects on temporality, continuity of nature, and organic relationships between individuals. Majeo’s reflection of these concepts appear to derive from her profound interest in the philosophy of “emptiness (空)” in Buddhism.

From early on in her life, the artist has been dedicated to examining the self. In her late twenties, she shaved her head and joined the Buddhist Songgwangsa Temple to meditate and address her inner conflicts. She was eventually able to escape much of her spiritual turmoil through deep meditation and practice. Nature may seem to be designed and devised in a perfectly smooth order, but it is, in fact, in constant flux, full of unexpected coincidences and discontinuous shifts in time. The philosophy of “emptiness” in Buddhism, likewise, centers on the fluid and ever-changing concept of “dependent arising (緣起),” emphasizing impermanence (無常) and “non-self (無我).”

Majeo Kim’s concept of “non-angularity” profoundly relates to these Buddhist philosophies. Mathematical thinking or intellectual analysis by humans eliminate subtle differences and continuity in nature by categorizing and labeling. This leads to incomplete knowledge, caused by taking away a part of nature’s ever-changing current and defining it in a fixed perspective. This type of knowledge may be useful in certain practical sense, but it ultimately becomes a form of violence when it becomes absolute and forced.

Majeo Kim’s art stems from resistance against such violence of social authority defined by instrumental rationality and knowledge. As a free spirit, the artist experienced the oppression and rigidity of her patriarchal society more intensely than anyone. In her early work, which mainly consisted of painting, this conflict is more explicitly expressed. The artist’s early work before her marriage often portrayed vibrant and beautiful artificial flowers in vivid detail, expressing her superficial ego that is masked in illusion. However, as the artist went through turbulent times in her marriage and in life, her interest turned internally toward the ego within. Her work evolved in similar form to the traditional Korean painting genre of chaekgado (bookshelf painting), but with countless pockets of her subconscious constructing a hive where the most unpleasant and fearful memories would emerge.

Chaekgado, which became popular in Korean folk painting during the late Joseon Dynasty, portrays piles of books in arrangement with various items symbolizing good luck and fortune, similar to still life. The doll figure, which appears in all of the artist’s work as a signature motif, represents a self-portrait of her oppressed and hurt self. She continued to include these self-portraits into her paintings, and later wooden objects, which she began to produce after finding a new career as a furniture designer at the age of forty. While producing commercial furniture, she also began to apply the same chaekgado format to her objects. It was during the time Majeo Kim participated in the Usine Utopik residency program in France that she translated the chaekgado from painting to objects, and exhibited them for the first time.

By exploring past trauma and pain lingering in her subconscious through figurative images, the artist began to contemplate on the essence of those that inflicted violence toward her. Through the process, she discovered that at the root of this silent violence inflicted in the name of rationality and reason, was the dichotomous nature of human discernment. She realized that instrumental rationality, which is revered and held sacred by the society, was ultimately the oppressor of individual character and desire. The rectangular boxes that resemble drawers in her painting, then became the symbol of this instrumental rationality, which confines and oppresses individual desire.

The artist’s recent “shaped wooden objects” transform conventional triangular, rectangular, or circular forms into non-angular, nongeometric furniture. Instead of explicitly expressing the oppressed and broken ego, the objects strive to celebrate the freedom of liberation by playfully reflecting on the rigid social conventions and rationality. The artist employs various strategies to deconstruct the rectangular form that symbolizes such socially oppressive elements. At times, she disperses the rectangles in various angles and directions, then reconstructs them, or other times, combines two or three basic shapes to stretch them out and capture the form that emerges by chance. Through the process, which evokes the multiple perspective of cubism, the shapes come together in playful coincidence to reemerge as a new form. The new form, in turn, preciously breathes life into the wooden objects.

The shaped wooden objects, created through this process, embody the artist’s desire to resist and break free from the rigid human systems of categorization and knowledge. As Nietzsche and Deleuze highlighted, desire is not a phenomenological idea or fixed entity. It is rather nomadic and ever-evolving, creating countless encounters and differences between multiple individuals. Such concept of desire is by no means inferior to rationality, but illuminates the subtle and enigmatic vitality of nature that cannot be captured through mathematical thinking or geometry. In the final stage of the production, the wooden objects are completed with square-shaped mother-of-pearl inlay decorating the surface in different sections. This final stage represents the emergence of new life, created by deconstructing conventional forms. Like flesh healed from a wound, the sparkling inlay seems to symbolize healing and sublimation over life’s challenges and obstacles.

Wood is a unique material that expands and contracts as it sensitively reacts to the climate even after it is cut from the tree. Majeo’s work is not simply an object realized through her artistic will, but one that is created by the process of engaging and negotiating with the wood and its energy of life. This is perhaps the reason why Majeo’s objects feel warm and human, unlike the cold and conceptual shaped canvas in Western minimalism. Her work not only reflects Korea’s cultural tradition of engaging and reconciling with nature, but also brilliantly reinterprets the proud tradition of wooden furniture from the Joseon period.

유목적 욕망과 유희 담긴 ‘쉐이프트 목기’

우리가 일반적으로 생각하는 가구는 네모반듯한 직사각형의 상자 형태로 이루어져 있다. 그것은 수납의 편리함과 제작의 용이함을 위해 오랫동안 당연시되어온 전통이다. 그러나 김마저의 목기는 그러한 상식을 뒤집는 즐거운 유희가 있다. 일반 가구에서 좀처럼 찾아볼 수 없는 예각이나 둔각뿐만 아니라 미묘하게 휘어진 곡선이 등장한다. 때로는 목재를 엿가락처럼 휘어 쉼표처럼 생긴 형태가 나오기도 한다. 이러한 형태를 드로잉하는 것은 가능하지만, 유연성이 없는 단단한 목재를 실제로 이렇게 자유롭게 변형시켜 만드는 것은 매우 어려운 일이다. 이러한 변형을 위해서는 나무로 먼저 ‘지그’(jig)라는 특수 보조용 기구를 만들어야 한다. 이른바 ‘쉐이프트 목기’라고 부를 수 있는 이러한 작품은 이처럼 번거로운 과정을 거쳐 만들어진 것이다.

부조 형식의 결과물을 보여주는 김마저의 쉐이프트 목기는 구체적인 기능이 정해지지는 않았지만, 무언가 올려놓아도 좋을듯한 잠재적 공간을 이루고 있다. 이것은 가구의 기능적 공간을 심리적 공간으로 변형시켜 공예의 기능성과 예술의 자율성을 화해시킨 것이다. 그녀는 이런 방식으로 공예와 예술, 기능성과 자율성, 가구와 조각 같은 이분법적 분류를 무너뜨리고, 그 경계에서 그 어느 것도 희생시키지 않으면서 중도적 자유를 누리고 있다.

이러한 작품은 양식적으로 미니멀리즘의 ‘쉐이프트 캔버스’(Shaped canvas)와 유사하게 보인다. 프랭크 스텔라의 쉐이프트 캔버스는 미술의 자율성을 위해 재현적 일루전을 제거해가는 과정에서 사각의 캔버스를 없애고 그림의 내용이 곧바로 형태가 되게 만들었다. 그래서 작품을 “우리 앞에 존재하는 것은 바로 우리가 보고 있는 것에 지나지 않는다”라는 원칙에 부합하게 했다. 이러한 미니멀리즘의 쉐이프트 캔버스는 삶과 일상을 완전히 제거하고 ‘자기지시적’인 즉물성을 드러내어 현상학적인 현전을 체험하게 했다.

그러나 김마저의 ‘쉐이프트 목기’는 이처럼 자연과 인간을 제거해가는 서양의 미니멀리즘과 달리, 즉물적이고 차가운 미니멀 아트에 뜨거운 인간의 감정과 욕망을 개입시켜 만든 것이다. “형태는 기능을 따른다.”라는 루이스 설리반의 기능주의는 모던 공예의 이상이 되었고, 이를 위해 불필요한 장식을 배제하고 온전히 기능에 따른 형태를 추구했다. 김마저의 쉐이프트 목기는 프랭크 게리가 성냥갑 모양의 모던 건축을 해체하듯이, 이러한 기능주의 가구를 해체하면서 자신의 유목적 욕망과 본성의 유희를 반영한 것이다. 그녀는 이러한 자신의 작품을 “무각(無角)의 유희”라고 부른다.

“무각형이란 규정 지을 수 없는 계속 변해가는 비정형 도형의 형태를 지칭한다. 우리는 사각, 삼각으로 수많은 분류를 하고 제도와 규범이라는 틀 안에 코드화되어 있다.”(작가노트)

여기서 ‘무각’이란 인위적으로 규정하고 고정된 삼각이나 사각 같은 정형화된 형태에서 벗어나 자유롭게 변해가는 역동성을 의미한다. 이때 ‘무(無)’는 “없다”라는 의미가 아니라 타자와의 관계 속에 끊임없이 유동적으로 변화하기에 “고정되지 않는다”라는 개념에 가깝다. 이러한 무각의 개념에는 수학적으로 고정된 공간이 아니라 지속적인 자연의 시간성과 과정성, 그리고 서로 다른 개체 간의 유기적 관계성에 대한 사유가 담겨 있다. 이러한 사유는 그녀가 심취한 불교의 ‘공’(空)사상에서 비롯된 것으로 보인다.

일찍부터 자아에 관한 탐구에 골몰했던 그녀는 20대 후반, 머리를 깎고 송광사에 들어가 수행을 할 정도로 정신적 갈등이 컸다. 그리고 깊은 명상과 수행을 통해서 어느 정도 정신적 고통에서 벗어날 수 있었다. 사실 자연은 물질적으로 일정하게 마름질 되어 있는 것 같지만, 연속적인 시간의 작용 속에 우연적 만남과 불연속적인 도약이 이루어지며 끝없이 변해가고 있다. 불교의 ‘공(空)’사상은 이처럼 고정된 것이 아니라 상호 작용하며 끝없이 변화하는 ‘연기(緣起)’작용에 주목하여 ‘무상’(無常)과 ‘무아’(無我)를 주장한다.

김마저의 ‘무각’(無角)의 개념은 이러한 불교사상과 깊은 관련이 있다. 인간의 수학적 사고나 지성적 분석은 자연에서 연속적인 흐름과 미세한 차이를 거세하고 동일성으로 대상을 분류하고 이름을 붙인다. 이것은 지속으로 변하는 자연의 흐름에서 일부를 떼어내고 고정하여 얻은 불완전한 지식이다. 이러한 지식은 실용적인 측면에서 유용한 도구가 될 수 있으나 이것을 온전한 것으로 절대시하고 계몽할 때 폭력이 될 수 있다.

김마저의 예술은 이러한 도구적 이성과 지식화된 사회적 권력의 폭력성에 대한 저항에서 비롯된 것이다. 자유로운 영혼을 지닌 그녀는 가부장적 남성 중심 사회에서 겪어야 했던 억압과 경직성을 누구보다도 예민하게 느꼈다. 회화가 주류를 이루었던 초기 작업에서는 이러한 갈등을 보다 직접적으로 표현했다. 결혼 이전의 초기 작품에서는 주로 화려하고 예쁜 플라스틱 조화(造花)를 사실적으로 묘사하여 허구로 치장된 자신의 피상적인 자아를 표현했다. 그러나 평탄치 못한 결혼 생활과 파란만장한 인생의 질곡을 경험하면서 그녀의 관심사는 상처 입은 자신의 내면적 자아로 향하게 된다. 그리고 벌집처럼 수많은 무의식의 방에 저장된 두렵고 불쾌한 기억들을 끄집어내어 민화의 책가도 형식으로 표현하였다.

조선 후기에 유행한 민화 책가도는 높게 쌓아놓은 책더미와 여러 가지 길상과 구복의 상징적 물건들을 정물화처럼 배치한 그림이다. 이때 그림에 트레이드 마크처럼 등장했던 인형 같은 인물상은 바로 억압받고 상처 입은 본인의 자아상이었다. 이러한 자아상을 회화 작품과 목기에 그려 넣었는데, 그녀가 목기 작업을 시작한 계기는 40의 나이에 가구 디자이너로 취직을 하면서부터이다. 상업 가구들을 제작하면서 그녀는 평소 좋아했던 민화의 책가도 형식을 차용하게 된다. 그리고 프랑스의 유진 유토픽(Usine Utopik) 레지던시 프로그램에 참가하여 그림으로만 표현하여 오던 책가도 형식의 작품을 입체 작품으로 제작하여 전시하였다.

무의식에 저장된 상처와 응어리를 구상적 이미지로 풀어내면서 그녀는 자신에게 폭력을 가한 대상의 본질을 사유하게 된다. 그리고 합리적 이성이라는 명분으로 자행되는 은밀한 폭력의 뿌리에 인간의 이분법적 분별심이 자리하고 있다는 걸 발견하였다. 사회적으로 거룩하게 포장된 도구적 이성이 개인의 본성과 욕망을 억누르고 있음을 알아차린 것이다. 이때부터 서랍 같은 사각형의 상자는 개인의 욕망을 억압하고 가두어 질식시키는 도구적 이성의 상징물로 자리하게 된다.

근작인 ‘쉐이프트 목기’는 도구적 이성을 상징하는 사각이나 삼각, 원형 등의 정형화된 도형을 무각의 비정형 목기로 변형시킨 것이다. 이것은 억압받고 상처받은 자아를 직접적으로 노출하는 대신 사회적으로 경직된 규범과 도구적 이성을 유희의 대상으로 삼아 해방의 자유를 누리려는 것이다. 경직된 이성과 사회적 규범을 상징하는 사각형의 정형을 해체하기 위해 그녀는 다양한 방법들을 시도하고 있다. 사각형을 다양한 각도에서 여러 방향으로 늘어놓고 종합하여 재구성하는가 하면, 둘 또는 세 가지 기본 도형을 결합하고 늘리는 과정에서 우연적으로 나온 형태를 포착하기도 한다. 이처럼 입체파적 다시점의 종합이나 서로 다른 도형이 우연적으로 만나 어우러지는 관계속에 새로운 형태로의 도약이 이루어진다. 그리고 그렇게 포착된 새로운 도형을 생명체를 탄생시키듯이 소중하게 조형 언어로 제작하게 된다.

이러한 과정을 통해 탄생한 쉐이프트 목기에는 인간의 분석적 분류체계와 경직된 지식에 저항하여 자유를 구가하려는 그녀의 욕망이 담겨 있다. 니체나 들뢰즈가 주목했듯이, 욕망은 형이상학적인 이데아나 고정된 본질이 아니라 유목적으로 부단히 생성하고 변화하며 다자 간의 거침 없는 만남과 차이들을 생산한다. 이러한 욕망은 이성보다 열등한 개념이 아니라 인간의 수학적 사유와 기하학으로 포착 불가능한 오묘하고 미묘한 자연의 생명력을 현시한다. 그리고 이렇게 만들어진 쉐이프트 목기 일부에 조개껍데기에서 떼어낸 정사각형 모양의 작은 자개들을 규칙적으로 상감하여 작품을 마무리한다. 이것은 규정된 형태를 해체한 후, 새 생명을 탄생시키는 마지막 절차이다. 영롱하고 아름다운 신비를 머금은 자개의 문양은 상처가 아물어 돋아난 새살처럼 시련과 역경을 극복한 치유와 승화를 상징하는 듯하다.

나무는 다른 재료와 달리 잘린 후에도 기후 변화에 민감하게 반응하며 수축과 팽창을 반복한다. 가구의 잔재가 남아 있는 김마저의 쉐이프트 목기는 자신의 조형 의지를 일방적으로 실현하는 게 아니라 생명이 남아 있는 나무와 대화하고 타협하며 만든 것이다. 그래서 그런지 그녀의 작품은 개념적이고 차가운 서양의 쉐이프트 캔버스와 달리 따스한 인간적 온기와 정감이 느껴진다. 이것은 인간과 자연의 친밀한 화해를 추구한 한국 특유의 소박한 전통을 계승한 것이며, 조선 목가구의 훌륭한 전통을 현대적 감각으로 재해석한 것이다.
